Doesn't Toray still have their headquarters in No. Kingstown ?

Most southern and western states are Right to Work states, that may have some bearing on where companies locate.

But the OP wants to know why they are building up a new location in SC instead of expanding further in RI.

The article said it was proximity to their customers. I don't know what they do or who their customers are.

The Quonset plant makes a different product then the proposed SC plant which is geared to the expanding aeronautic industry in SC. Toray has made a commitment to their Quonset facility with expansion and going green.

BMW and now Boeing have made a big presence in SC......Boeing has been in SC a while and they just mentioned they are relocating their paint facility there.

I believe your right in that the Right to Work status in SC has helped them.

Good news, although not for manufacturing in RI.....Quonset is one of the top auto import port locations in the US and growing

They have plenty of room to grow, and it's a great use of that giant parking lot! Of the 19 ports where cars are delivered by sea, Quonset ranks #11th. Still, that's over 170,000 cars a year that are dropped off. If you've never had a chance to visit a car importing port, it is very interesting. You think you're buying a new car, but there are huge buildings that are used for repainting, pulling dents, installing accessories, etc. I worked for VW back when they imported through Boston, and it was amazing seeing how much work on the cars is actually done at the port. Quite a few of the cars come pretty beat up and are repaired here in the States before they're sold as "new".
