Can you find a good average snowfall map? All I found was this- seems like Virginia, for example, would normally get much less snow than us.

That seems pretty good. It may be that some of the Southerly areas get walloped with much of their snow all at once? I just remember in recent years seeing DC get slammed with over 15 inches while we got like 7 or 8. Seems to have been the trend since '05 or so.

Admittedly, I haven't really examined the comparative data points like I have with temperatures.

Virginia usually does get much less snow than RI at similar elevations. And, the winter temperature is usually warmer in southern NE. Recently the dipping jet stream (polar vortex) has brought cold weather farther south giving the mid-Atlantic snow when they would usually get rain, plus making us colder on the way down. Let's hope this is an anomaly and not a new normal brought on by climate change.
