^From that list, the only states in the Forbes top 10 where I would consider living are #8 Washington and #9 Minnesota. Ok, maybe #5 Colorado or (if pressed) #4 Virginia. The rest? Yuck.
The Forbes article does place us a little ahead of the CNBC article, for what little that's worth.
Those "best" and "worst" lists are always so subjective that they're barely worth glancing at. The Rhode Island challenge is adding the 10%-er non-health care jobs that drive the rest of the economy. If you look at this list of largest employers, there aren't many in the mix that fill office buildings with people making 6-figure salaries. Rhode Island's Largest Employers

Maybe others are yuck to you, but the thread is not about you. Sorry.
Also, there are very few companies on there that were actually "hatched" in RI; and their headquarters are in other states. Such as Bank of America ... Charlotte NC. Check the relocation figures on Charlotte, you can hardly drive on Rt. 85 anymore, half the northeast and NY have been coming here for years.
AT Cross in Lincoln used to be a very large local employer; now their parking lot is half full; and the Boss family bailed out of there a long time ago. Pity. All of their products are now made in China. Pity.
Shaw's is another one holding their head above water in RI; and they are not a RI company either.
It depends on what metrics you use. It's #1 for health/life expectancy. It's #2 for per-capita disposable income. Very high employment rate. It is #1 in patents awarded per capita. It's world class for universities.
If you're sitting in a traffic jam on the Southeast Expressway or you're a high school dropout with no 21st century job skills, it's a suck quality of life.
I find the absolute glee that certain posters have in the setbacks of Rhode Island to be a signal of significant personality flaws, flaws that are unattractive and rather disturbing. Sadistic, really.

...
Virginia is pretty hicky (though gorgeous) and NoVa is just disgusting sprawl. Ever been to Rosslyn or Crystal City? It makes Charlotte look tolerable, which it ain't.

It's not for me but Charlotte is booming. Plenty of high quality jobs. Bank of America and Wells Fargo both have a huge presence there driving the economy. Housing in the upper middle class enclave towns with the good school systems is very inexpensive.

Oh, I know, but thanks for your condolences. The thread is about RI unemployment rate. This discussion of the other states seems a little peripheral to the conversation. But all that gridlock with the heat and humidity? I guess that's paradise.
RI is not the only state to suffer manufacturers moving fabrication overseas. To me it's a business strategy that's penny wise and pound foolish.
