The East Side is attractive for different reasons to Barrington, its proximity to Brown, RISD, etc etc and its cadre of historic homes. Barrington is a lovely suburb but also, like the east side, contains various socioeconomic sections. It is also less accessible to regular commuters while the East Side can be "walk to downtown". Both are nice for different reasons; "more attractive" is surely in the eyes of the individual and their needs and wants.

Portsmouth is a lovely place now and hopefully for the foreseeable future, if it does not over develop- the kiss of death as far as I'm concerned. I find the words "always" and "never" rarely apply, especially to communities, which by nature, change. Although, I must say, I used to think that Rhode Island changed very slowly compared to other parts of the country. Now the speed of change has increased in my observation. But I digress, this thread is about Portsmouth.

Thank you all for your input. I think we will have to drive over and just spend some time driving around. We are also planning a road trip into Plymouth, MA or So. Shore MA which I think might also give us the beachy, island, laid back vibe we are hoping to find yet still have a somewhat closer commute into Bos Logan.
Thanks.
