One of the big selling points of Providence to me is the Latin culture.

How prevalent is it within the city as a whole? Is it a case of other locals integrating with the culture or more of each keeping to their own? How accepting are the people in the area of "outsiders"? Places for good music and/or authentic food?

As a point of reference I'm most use to hanging around creative/artistic NY Puerto Ricans. Although my best female friend is mixed white/Latin from MI and my other PR buddy is living/from Charlottesville, VA.

The latin culture is quickly becoming dominate in much of Providence, except perhaps the East Side. The political power in Providence is completing the transition from Italian immigrant to Latino immigrant. The last two mayors have been latino. Because the city is minority majority, acceptance is a given in most areas. Dominicans are still the largest individual group, but recently more Mexicans and Central Americans are arriving. Of course, Puerto Ricans were first. You'll like it!

The only poster I've seen on this forum who could tell you much about this side of the city is this guy- he hasn't been back - perhaps you could PM him…

Funny how the exact thing they were complaining about in that video got them featured on the news.

Anyway, any good eats people can recommend? Looking to try Cape Verde food too.

Tried the "Jaws beer" (Narragansett) that seems to be the area's cheap beer, but it wasn't a style I liked. Any local recommendations in that area?

What style do you prefer? Newport Storm is pretty good, and available all over.

Try O Dinis in East Providence. Not 100% sure if it's Cape Verdean or Portuguese, but I'm assuming the 2 aren't that different from each other. Used to be my favorite lunch spot when I worked on that side of the bay.

Honestly I'm not sure. Out of the cheap beers PRB & schlitz is okay. Usually I either drink Widmer hefeweizen or Woodchuck Cider. Mostly stuff that isn't too heavy on the hops. Although a while back I did find a seasonal that was made with a ton of cherries at a beer festival. It was good.

He is the only South Providence resident I recall posting here. I'm fairly certain that none of the regular posters live in South Providence.

I see. So I infer that you equate Latino culture in Providence with South Providence. Upper? Lower?

The OP was asking about Latino culture in Providence. I believe it extends beyond South Providence into Elmwood, Reservoir, West Elmwood/West Side, Olneyville, Silver Lake, Washington Park, etc. Surely there has to be some regular poster on here from one of those neighborhoods? Really, nobody?
