Dissapointing, but plenty of states have been headed this way. It's partly why students are graduating with such incredible debt burdens nowadays.

What really surprised me in those numbers was Oregon. In most of the states where prison spending exceeds higher ed spending, it's only by a little bit (i.e., in RI prison spending is like 5% more than college spending). In Oregon, prison spending is THREE TIMES higher ed spending. Oregon is #2 in the nation in prison spending, and #50 in the nation in college spending. Not quite the model high-tech paradise that Portlandiaphiles imagine.
