When I first came to Rhode Island a few months ago, I was surprised to find out there is no Citi branch in the entire state. They were everywhere in all the places I had been to! I only have Citi accounts. Since I rarely use cash, not having a branch nearby hasn't been a problem. However, I have a few checks that I need to cash. I can't use mobile check deposit since the check amounts were too big. Where's the nearest Citi branch I can visit?
They recently tried to expand in the Boston Area but ended up closing all of their branches (I think there were 17). I don't know that they're going to be trying again in New England any time soon.
I had a Citibank account when I moved here -- it was the only checking account I'd ever had. My dad worked for Citibank for 35 years, so I had brand loyalty! But after one drive to Boston just to deposit a check, I realized I had to close the account. Now that even the Boston branches are closed, it doesn't make any sense to have an account while living in Rhode Island.
It's worth mentioning that Citibank ATMs are available at 7-11 locations, so at least you can make withdrawals without fees. You can't make deposits at those ATMs.
After canceling Citibank, I got an Ally account, and after two years, I'm still loving it. Ally doesn't have any branches anywhere, but they reimburse ATM fees up to a point (they used to reimburse all ATM fees, but they ended that around six months ago -- I still haven't reached the limit). All deposits are done by mail, mobile app or PC/scanner. All checks are free. Their customer service is second to none. I've never even waited as long as 60 seconds to talk to someone, at any hour of the day. The only snag I ever hit was when I needed a cashier's check the next day. That's not possible and you have to pay a hefty fee even if you want it rushed to it arrives within two days, but as long as you plan ahead a little bit, there's no issue.
So, why did Citi and Chase pull out of this area? We moved here and had the same issue. We kept our Chase account...using online and drop into one whenever we visit NYC. We do have local Credit Union accounts, which is great...but was just curious what happened?
