Hi everyone, my wife and I are on our late 20s and are planning to purchase a home in North Smithfield. Is it a good town? Anything I should know about the town? Overall it seems great with excellent schools only downside is it is a bit rural but it is close enough to Providence and other things to do in the area. Thanks!

Yes, it is nice as long as you don't buy on the Woonsocket RI line. Woonsocket has some very sketchy areas.
The parts of Woonsocket near North Smithfield aren't particularly sketchy, not are the parts of North Smithfield near Woonsocket. Where exactly are you looking?

North Smithfield is a typical suburban town largely made up of a tract type housing stock. The schools are ok by RI standards. There is no village center to speak of. I'm not sure the place has any identifiable character, other than to say, perhaps it's sleepy. Of all of RI's 39 cities and town, while it's probably nice enough, it comes least to mind.
My husband grew up in North Smithfield and I visit my in laws often. I would not characterize it as suburban with tract type housing. Slatersville is renowned as the first planned mill village, village green surrounded by historic homes. Great Road is lined with very nice historic homes, they sure are nice to drive by. Wright's dairy has delicious milk and baked goods. There are good restaurants from the Beef barn to the Village Haven. The newish Dowling village houses Walmart, Lowe's, Petsmart and others. The traffic is not hellish. Easy drive to Providence, 30-40 minutes. Schools are good, I believe(no children for us, but our nieces got a good education in North Smithfield). We live in neighboring Burrillville, 4 miles from the North Smithfield line. I believe you get more house for your money in Burrillville, but it is a big town in area. Decidedly more rural in the western part, but Harrisville center is charming with a great new library. Both towns sponsor free concerts with decent musicians. Both towns are close to the Massachusetts border. Northwest RI is often overlooked, but there is a great quality of life there.

Thank you for the well detailed response. We are planning to move forward on the house and everything we have seen about North Smithfield seems all positive. I agree the quality of life seems great! I don't need the hustle of a big city like Boston and it's close enough to Providence and plenty to do.
