Tennis in North Providence/Smithfield/Providence (Warwick, Pawtucket: rent, club, moving to)

I am moving to North Providence this Summer and looking for a good place to play tennis. I am a 3.5, play 2-3 times a week. I enjoy both single and double.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

At 3.5 you should have no trouble finding people to play with in Rhode Island.

In Providence at Roger Williams Park there is the Todd Morsilli Clay Court Tennis Center. These are outdoor public clay courts which open in April and stay open well into the fall. They do match making, both singles and doubles. It is a fantastic public facility that is well run. I highly recommend it.

Pawtucket Parks department used to host a summer league open to residents and non-residents alike on hard courts at Slater Park. I'm sure other towns do as well. Smithfield has a league but it is only open to residents. Peruse the town websites to find out about leagues.

There are several outdoor clubs in the area that require membership. USTA leagues seem pretty popular too.

There are also several indoor facilities. Tennis RI in both East Providence and Warwick, Centre Court Tennis Club in East Providence, and The Indoor Tennis Court in East Providence (one court!) come to mind (the Warwick location of Tennis RI is a little far perhaps). I don't think any of these require membership; I think the first two have (or had) singles ladders scheduled twice per week. And at these non-membership clubs, people generally contract for the same time throughout the season; if you call the front desk at one of these facilities, they might know of a doubles group with a contract time looking for another member. There's also ForeCourt in Cumberland if you are looking for a club that requires membership.

For a different experience, I recommend you get yourself down to Newport and go to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. You can rent time to play on their grass courts. It's not inexpensive but playing grass court tennis is a real treat.

And if you like to watch tennis, in July the Hall of Fame hosts a grass court tournament which begins just as Wimbledon ends. It attracts decent talent.

You forgot Rally Point in Greenville. I played there in the '90's and am thinking of joining again. They had 6 courts (either 6 or 8-I can't remember now if there were 3 or 4 courts on each side. There's a lounge upstairs that looks over the courts. They have leagues, both singles and doubles (and mixed). They have a ball machine and give lessons.

It's a great little place in the heart of Greenville, just behind the Baptist Church off Rt. 44. Very close to NP
