The presumed lower prices are the glittery, distracting crumbs falling from the table above, where the bread is.
Never mind lower energy prices. The big benefit to RI would be tax revenue and high paying construction and operating jobs. Any slight lowering of electricity costs are just an extra bonus. It's ALL about jobs, people!!!
I agree with you and agree that there is no need to nitpick over Dem. vs Republican. That was not the main point I was trying to make- the prism- as you put it- was the point.
However, voting Repub as a protest isn't going to do a damn bit of good if both parties continue to ignore the will of the people especially since Repubs are more often in favor of big business over the general populace.
It's a basis of their platform.
This is why the state needs Voter Initiative and Referendum, the right of voters to petition to have binding questions added to the ballot.
This is one thing that will return power to the people here. We could real Ethics reform on the ballot, Line item veto, and certainly get a bill like the Power Plant bill on the ballot.

How many jobs, apart from short term construction? How many good paying jobs once in operational mode?

they have stated 25-30 continuing jobs to run the structure. 300-350 workers for its construction. If it gets built, those workers who have done the construction should be forced to buy out the surrounding owners of the site and made to move there. If you can build it then it is safe enough for you to live there and bring your families up there.
Okay, clearly I have not done my citizen's due diligence on this issue. Isn't this facility pretty much what we have down by IWAY, the rather attractive triple-stack plant? Or something completely different?
let's not forget that a plant was proposed 6 miles away in Uxbridge, but that plant was voted down by the citizens of Uxbridge. Hmmm, a democratic system lost in Rhode Island.
What's ProJo's editorial position on this? I've been doing catch-up reading @ RIFuture but don't watch tv and don't read the carpetbagger parakeet papah.
