I have read conflicting views on the Mt. Hope neighborhood regarding livability and how safe it is. I used to live in RI back in the late 90's and I am moving back.

I found a beautiful home in the neighborhood between Main St. and Hope St., just north of Olney St. I know that there is a lot of new stores, etc in the area, but how "up and coming" is it? I just don't want to live in an area that I have to constantly worry about break ins, and being afraid to walk outside at night. I realize that crime happens everywhere, but I am just wondering what this particular area is like now as it has been almost 20 years since I have been here.

not as good as it use to be. Still high rent because of students. University Heights has gone down hill some with it's clientele. I would stay North of Doyle. east of Camp (not on it) and north of Rochambeau. Abbott Hill still has some nice homes, but there are many section 8 type properties in the area. Some people will tell you to stay east of Hope Street, but I know many people who live on Mt. Hope Ave, Evergreen and Forest. They like the area and are not afraid to walk around to Hope Street. Camp Street has been the same for the last 60 years, the rowdier part of the East Side, except all the mom and pop stores are now gone

East of Camp Street is much better that it used to be and is getting better all the time. It's still kind of dicey between Camp and North Main.

Thanks for the info! I am going to be checking the area out and look at the house, but wanted to make sure. The house is rather new (built in 2014), so I figured it had to be getting better if they are building new homes in the area. Can't wait to come back!

Mt Hope is loved by many of the residents I know. Like everything else, it Location, location, location with the closer to Hope (and the East Side), generally the better. There are break-ins from time to time, but most consider it a safe neighborhood. You can certainly get more for your money in such fine PVD neighborhoods as Elmhurst, but if you want to live on or near the East Side, it probably can't be beat.
