Anyone hear anything about the new station in Wickford or the Airport? Are these feasible? They would easily be affordable, especially with my transit benefit, but I think the time might be too much with those.

The airport is suppose to be available by next October and Wickford a year after that. Anywhere from 8-12 trains, not completely finalized yet. Expect the one way fare to between $9-$11 with monthly commuter fares much lower. The MBTA might get to the Kingston station in the future. There is also talk of the Connecticut South Coast train expanding towards Providence.
BTW, Amtrak is pretty reliable

I commuted from Cranston to Boston (Back Bay) for a while. I drove from Cranston to South Attleboro to catch the commuter rail. Not only was it less expensive for the train, but parking in Providence was pretty expensive compared to S. Attleboro. The S. Attleboro parking lot fills quickly and EARLY! To make certain I got a decent parking spot, I took a very early train (around 5:30-6am). The ride in was fine. Coming home was another story - unless you leave eary or late, you might have to stand (no seats) until the train gets past Sharon. Many people do this commute. I tired of it quickly.

Travel ADVICE NEEDED for trains from Providence to New York Pen' Station
Hi We are visiting Newport this summer, and need to take a train from Providence to New York. Can any one give me any advice on which train companies offer this service, the name of the Providence train staition and any websites for time tables.
We need to drop a hire car off so hoping to do this at Providence airport, and then take a taxi to the train station with luggage. Is the train station far from the airport?
Any help or advice will be most helpful.
Thank you

Your question is really not relevant to the OP's question, but the simple answers are:
1. Taxi from Warwick (Providence airport location) to Providence train station will be quite expensive. Check yellowpages.com for taxi/limo companies
2. There is only one "train company" and that is Amtrak and that's how you look up the website. The name of the Providence train station is Union but you'll find it listed on the train schedule as Providence.
3. You didn't ask, but did you check to see if you can get the train from the Warwick train station? That would sure save you a bunch of money and time getting from car drop off to the train station. I didn't search so I don't know.

Not sure if you are aware, but most people would pick up the train to NYC at the Kingston, RI station. If you fly in to Prov you could take the shuttle van to Newport and rent a car while in Newport. Hope this doesn't confuse things. It would be easier though, in some ways. Little state, but lots of options.

Take Amtrak Regional form NY Penn Station to Kingston,RI , look up a Taxi and have it take you too Newport. To get lower fares Amtrak you have to book 14 Days in Advance. It should be about 36-38$ for Amtrak.

Just book 14 days in advance and you'll get the lower fare and Providence does have taxis , although that might be costly to Newport.

Hi Many thanks for your ( and ALL Feedback comments) help, we are going to now drive down from Boston via Cape Cod, and I am advised that Hertz retacar allows you to drop off in Newport rather than needing to go to an Airport, if this is correct your suggestion of getting a train from Kingston sounds good...can you tell me how far Kingston RI station is from Newport? I have looked up the fare on Amtrak;- Prov. to NY Penn. and its not bad. I will now look up ticket costs from Kingston to NY Pen......do you know if this is a direct Amtrak service to NY or do you need to change at all?
Many thanks

Newport to Kingston station is pretty far to take a cab. There are Hertz agencies in West & North Kingston, why not drive there? It would save an expensive cab ride.
