In EG $500k will get you a nicely updated 3 bed 2 bath colonial in the village. Around 1600- 2000 sq. ft. Likely a garage. 8000+- sq. ft. lot.
In most parts of the town, you'll do a lot better than that. I got a 4 bedroom 2 bath expanded Cape, about 2,200 square feet (including the finished basement) on a quarter acre, move-in ready, for well under $400,000. Prices are up, but they're not that far up.
Take a look at this one for $509k: Four beds, 2.5 baths, almost 4,000 square feet, three-car garage, two-acre lot in a very desirable part of town.

OP hasn't mentioned price but most of these "may not be in your price range". Some decent but less pricey areas might be around Slater Park or Fairlawn in Pawtucket, Manville and similar sections in Lincoln,
houses around Atwells Ave on Federal Hill might be "up and coming", Riverside or Kent Heights in East Providence (more suburban), Fruit Hill section of North Providence, Eden Park section of Cranston.
Probably others can add to the list.
They had already said $500k. With a budget like that, you must literally be on crack to consider places like Fairlawn or Manville.

If you're you're hell bent on coming to Rhode Island, I'd recommend the East Side of Providence or the Oak Hill section of Pawtucket. Personally, I wouldn't want to be far from Blackstone Boulevard. There's some sharp real estate people on this forum who could tell you if it's in your price range. It's where I am, and as a native Bostonian it's been a pleasant surprise. Beware the taxes though! Both home and auto, ouch!
Is this a recommendation that considers children/raising a family?
I don't mean to pass the buck, but I'm not a native. There's plenty of folks on this forum who can elaborate much more knowledgeably than me. With schools being such a primary concern, best to be certain. Great area with nice people though.

The East Side & Oak Hill are great places to raise children, if private school is in your budget.
