Maybe a really long time ago but that's been a bank (not the current bank - it was a Citizens) since at least the 90s. I used the ATM there often.

A very, very, very long time ago, and I think it was farther up the block where the smaller stores are now.

Whoa.

1935 Providence House Directory

135 Elmgrove was a Piggly Wiggly in 1935. Santander is 131 Elmgrove, and 135 is Knead Doughnuts. The grocery store was probably at the corner and torn down for the bank many years ago.

Also:

736 Hope (now Henry Bear's Park) - Davis Apothecary
737 Hope (Gita Threading) - Another Piggly Wiggly!

Very interesting, and thanks for that link.

Side note: The Butcher Shop over there has the best prepared foods in RI.

And here's a 1938 directory.

Just in the two blocks from Rochambeau to Burlington, there were six grocery stores (Piggly Wiggly, First National, A&P, Lion, Public, and M. Weiner).

as stated Davis', they moved there from North Main Street, is still there. Before that the building held an ice cream shop called Rigney's. There was one in Washington Park also. Miller's Deli was further down the street.

Happened to notice last week that ground had been broken and work was proceeding on the new parking garage behind the Garrahy Courthouse. It will be seven-stories with 1,250 spaces.

Plan:
http://www.jewelrydistrict.org/uploa..._2017-0327.pdf

There is a lot of new construction going on in this area right now with this garage, the Wexford building, the pedestrian river bridge, and the River House residential buildings. These come on the heels of the recent RI Nursing Education Center and its nearby garage.

Checked out all the construction projects around downcity last Friday.

Commons at Providence Station (next to train station between river & tracks - 6 floors/255,553 SF/169 units)
Work continues. Exterior has looked nearly complete for some time. Progress appears slow.

Edge College Hill (Canal St - 15 floors/202 units)
Exterior of the tower is complete. Looks like interior work taking place. Fast pace.

Hilton Homewood Suites (Exchange St - 8 floors/120 rooms)
Exterior is complete. Looks like interior work taking place. Fast paced construction after slow site prep.

Marriott Residence Inn (Fountain Street - 9 floors/176 rooms)
Most of the steel work is now up.

Providence River Bridge (pedestrian bridge)
Work continues. Slow progress. Already one year behind schedule.

Wexford Science & Technology Innovation Center (Dyer St - 7 floors/195,000 SF)
Fast pace. Steel work complete and exterior walling going up.

River House (Point Street - two 7 floor buildings/174 residential units/270 beds)
Very fast pace. Steel work complete and exterior walling nearing completion.

44 Hospital Street (Hospital St - 6 floors/45,000 SF/30 units)
Looks done and ready for occupancy.

Garrahy Courthouse Garage (7 floors/1,250 spaces)
Still working on site prep for foundation. Slow progress.

In total these nine projects will add:
575 New Housing Units
296 New Hotel Rooms
195,000 SF of New R&D Space
1,250 New Parking Spaces
New Pedestrian River Crossing between the Eastside and Downcity

Chestnut Commons

The groundbreaking for Chestnut Commons took place on Friday 09/28/18. The 33M six story mixed use development will contain 91 residential units, approximately 5,300 square feet of streetscape retail, 30 covered parking spots, and 5,000 square feet of open green. It is on the former Route 195 land located at the corner of Chestnut and Friendship Streets and will extend to Claverick Street.

Edge College Hill II at 131 Canal Street (also fronts N Main St) gets city 20-year tax stabilization agreement approval which will save the owners some 19M. The 11-story apartment 63M building will include 163 studio and one-bedroom apartments geared toward students, according to Christopher Ise, principal planner with the City of Providence. The first floor will be dedicated to commercial use. It will be built on a longtime parking lot site adjacent to Edge College Hill I (15 floors/202 units) which is currently under construction.
