Pawtucket may soon lose another grand building from its past. The PFD Hose Co #6 firehouse on Central Avenue will likely soon be demolished. Its replacement may be none other than a Dollar General Store. If so, this would follow another architectural tragedy in Pawtucket as it would be similar to the removal of the iconic Leroy Theater to make way for a Walgreens and Wendy's.

Unique Senses of Place giving way to Anywhere USA is a tragedy, not just for Pawtucket, but for us all.

Some may notice my replies on this subject when it arises now and then.

I actually remember that building.

As a person that was involved in Historic Restoration, all I can say is:

"Well, there goes another one".

I don't know the restaurant had closed. I had my rehearsal dinner upstairs.

I'm surprised anyone would demolish this building

Geez, that is really too bad ! Although I haven't been thru Pawtucket for years, it's a shame that someone cannot make something nice out of it again. Doesn't it lend itself to apartments ? Was it 'let go' in disrepair or did Central Av. become a slum area like many others ? Is that an old photo ? would be a shame if it was now ugly.

I remember some very fun times there, especially around the holidays with many of our high school and college group -- having great 'reunions' with friends who moved away and were visiting -- so we would spread the word for a get together. We had to catch up on who was dating who; who was still single or got married. Once in awhile we had a hard time recognizing each other. Email was king.

Drove by there today. Much of the former firehouse has already been demolished. Very sad sight.
