That's the Federal Hill area, I assume? Safe to stroll or park a car while getting takeout?
I first enjoyed Sicilia's when it had a presence near Boston University maybe 20-25 years ago, on Commonwealth Avenue inbound just before the BU Bridge. It closed at least ten years ago.
I had read somewhere around that time that it had won a "best of" at a local pizza festival in Rhode Island in some local radio station contest. So I knew it wasn't a Boston original or an only location.
Their deep dish pizza with spinach and mushrooms was fantastic; I assume they still have it on their menu? Their regular cheese slices seemed ordinary, however.
Anybody else still enjoying their (only?) location nowadays? It seems they open until 2 am some nights, maybe 3 am?
I'll have to finally check it out and see if it compares to my memories from their Boston location.
I haven't had Sicilia's in several years, so I don't know if anything has changed, but I used to get delivery 2-3 times a week for years when I lived on the Hill. They would deliver until 3 or 4 AM (not sure about their current hours). I loved their stuffed pizzas but I did get to the point where I got tired of it.
Personally, I wouldn't make a special trip from Boston or Quincy. But if you're in the Providence area...sure.
If you are coming down from Boston to check out Sicila's, you can also check out the aforementioned places (Tommy's and Providence Coal-Fired downtown), and also check out Providence Flatbread Pizza on Thayer, its' brick oven pizza and they use organic ingredients in their pizza.
And thanks to all for the other pizza recommendations.
I was in Providence last week and just had to finally try the original (?) Sicilia's! It was a weekend at 1 a.m. and they still open until 3 a.m. on weekends, and I think deliver until then!
I liked the small bar area adjacent to the cashier and the prep area, all close together, with a friendly bartender and a couple regulars I observed while waiting in the takeout area.
I ordered the deep dish spinach, but no mushrooms this time unlike years ago in Boston when somehow I loved mushrooms. When I praised them for their old store in Boston years ago, they told me it closed maybe 15 years ago. That's seems right.
I enjoyed the pizza, probably as much or almost as much as before, years ago in Boston. I think the recipe is the same, but perhaps a bit of a curious sour taste now in the sauce? But I'll definitely return a few times this year when in the area. I'd say their regular neopolitan cheese slices are average or just above average, but not as appealing as their deep dish.
The street was quiet, as it was a few days after New Year's, and after 1 a.m. It would be more festive next time when I go during prime evening hours and the storefronts and signs are aglow.
