Note to OP if you’re still around: As you can see, there’s a strange & concerted effort by a couple of posters here to trash minority/majority Rhode Island neighborhoods & those who live in them. You may guess, they don’t represent most Rhode Islanders who choose to live here. While we may have our bigots, like everywhere, they are a tiny minority & usually stay under rocks.

Please continue to consider Providence as a place to land. It’s not perfect, but is one of the great small cities in America.

Sigh...

You just can't accept people giving the full scoop on the reality of life in Providence, now can you? And reality shows a super divided city. You may be OK with that from afar (despite having fled a certain inner city neighborhood as a white middle class male, due to the "ambient noise" present); but we owe outside inquirers the truth. I have no skin in the game, one way or the other.

Another thing not really discussed here that really should be noted for any future relocators, is the hopelessly dysfunctional city management and dire fiscal situation. Expect rising taxes and service cuts in the future, with bankruptcy probably the best option residents can hope for sadly. And this was all BEFORE Covid-19.

I'm still around! It's fun silently reading through people's comments, lol. Thanks for all who shared their opinions.

Providence has some of the very highest property taxes in the country. And some of the worst roads. And failing schools. And it faces nearly certain bankruptcy. It's tallest building downtown sits shuttered and vacant. Rhode Island moved a freeway and
can't sell the land that it freed up in Providence. They're growing sunflowers on it instead. Yes, really. The rest of the country didn't get the memo about Providence being one of the great small cities in America. It's losing population. More importantly, it's losing taxpayers. In a hurry. Providence is not a city on the way up. Bike friendly? Both main bridges on the most popular bike path are "condemned indefinitely due to neglect". Yes, really. By all means, consider Providence as a place to land. But land with a firm job offer. It's an employment wasteland. And bear in mind that Rhode Island has the country's 6th highest overall tax burden. And after you land, you'll spend many a sleepless night pondering just where on earth the money goes. Recessions absolutely crush Rhode Island. It had the highest unemployment in the country for 20 straight months in the last one. It's EXTREMELY stagnant, both economically and demographically. It's not for nothing that Rhode Island is slated to lose a rep in D.C. Consider Providence. But when they hand you the rose colored glasses at the visitors center, don't put 'em on.

Actually, I like Providence. I'm on record as saying that it's the 3rd best city of 100,000 in New England behind only Boston and Cambridge. Certainly a low bar, but it ain't nothing. Only Rhode Islanders themselves insure that it, along with the rest of the state, remains a perennial underpeformer forever doomed to backwater status.

And yes, Providence over Worcester. Or Hartford. Because of the food.
