Ulterior motives indeed. You don't need to be a "Johnston-style Democrat" to recognize that.
A small group objected to the rainbow flag flying at the Jamestown town hall. They said they didn't "agree" with it. The town council said it was a sign of the town's inclusion. The flag remained. As for Black Lives Matters: While private lawn signs of support can be seen all over town, I doubt if the flag will fly over town hall.

Free speech only applies to private citizens. A town has no business endorsing a political movement.

I think it depends on the local community standards, or lack of. Up until recently confederate flags flew over some local government buildings in the south. Probably, even hate groups would meet some community's standards - somewhere. We may know a lot about a community's standards by looking at its town hall flag poll. Elected officials always make the final decision in these matters. Democracy, the way it should be.
Imagine an NRA flag flying over the town hall. Who would be screaming bloody murder then?
Both BLM and the NRA are political special interest groups with huge numbers of detractors, are divisive, and don't represent all of the people. Pretty idiotic to put up such a flag.

I disagree. If the elected officials of a town/city approve a support flag, any flag, at town hall it's up the town's voters to render judgement on those elected officials. The rest of us, outside those communities, are only left with our opinions.

The community is rendering judgement, to wit, the elected officials were PRETTY IDIOTIC to put up the BLM flag.
