Hey folks,

I'm a resident of the lovely town of Holden, Mass., just north of Worcester. I'm hoping to move to Providence this summer, and am seriously considering an apartment on Waterman St. in the city's East Side. It's a first floor, though, which puts me pretty close to the street.

Safety is a big deal to me. Obviously my own physical well-being, but also my property. This is a very nice apartment (and building) - not at all cheap, gut renovation, lots of granite, etc. - which makes me inclined to believe Waterman is an area that supports quality living. However, I realize this is a city and it's not feasible to expect zero crime. But realistically, what can I expect? I've driven all around the Waterman area and it looks pretty good; Gano St. tends to trail off a bit, at least in its appearance.

In any event, your input is appreciated. Wherever I live, I don't want to be forking over money in rent that I'll need to repair theft damage or worse.

Thanks!
Jeff

Like you said "this is a city" and like Worcester the movement of sinister people is very easy. That being said. The East Side is a great area. Walkable any time of day and safe. Does the unheard of happen. Yes. But, as infrequently as in any type of suburban location. The Fox point area, some of Gano Street, does have its problems but it is a small number of blocks. In a city such as Providence a great area is separated from a bad area only by a block or two. Fox Point is surrounded by the best neighborhoods you would ever want to live in.

Yeah Waterman is very nice. Perhaps an occasional break-in before Christmas in the neighborhood, yes, but other than that, it's one of most sought-after neighborhoods in the city. First floor, get a cheap alarm and put the sticker on your window. I wouldn't worry at all though.
