Oh, and one more note about the racial divide a previous poster mentioned, I have actually found the opposite.
I'll be honest, NC has a lot more problems with racism. That is obvious. HOWEVER, I found that instead of racism being the classic black/white problem of the south, Rhode Island has a bigger problem with people of different nationalities. Here in NC, though there are obvious "black" areas of town, I still have every race and ethnicity living in my lovely middle class neighborhood. You go about town, and you see everyone everywhere you go. In Rhode Island, there are very specific areas of town that the various groups live. I'm Hispanic myself, and never once in my three years did I encounter a single other middle class, educated Hispanic person. I was so saddened by this. I was in a moms group, and every single other mom was caucasian. I joined a moms group here through the same means (meetup.com), and I have already met a very diverse group in my few months here. Maybe people up there are more tolerant, but they don't have many occasions to ever exercise that. There are horrible bigots down here, but there are plenty here who celebrate diversity too. Just my experience!
