Apologies if this post comes across as snooty, but my status-hungry cousin is relocating from California and was wondering if Barrington is considered the most posh town in the state. If not, what is?

Yes, it absolutely is.

Some of our members may point out that real estate is higher in Jamestown, but it is not the same.

Note that West Barrington (part of Barrington) is typically looked down upon by other Barrington residents. Not that there is anything wrong with West Barrington; it's just not "posh".

Some of East Greenwich, parts of the East Side of Providence, and parts of Newport fit what your cousin is looking for...but, overall, Barrington is the top choice for people like your cousin.

Redplum33,
Thanks for confirming!
And, yes, I know where you're going with the West Barrington/Barrington comparison. I live north of Boston and Andover is a posh town, yet Andover residents sort of look down on North Andover residents even tho North Andover is still a very nice town.

Indeed I agree. While Jamestown has higher property values, it & Barrington are not anything the same. Neither are Little Compton & Barrington the same. Totally different animals. No one would refer to Jamestown & Little Compton as “posh”.

Barrington is rural. I dont know how a rural area is "posh." Only in RI I guess.

Suburban, not rural.

Barrington is a suburb of Providence. And, to an aspiring social class, it would be considered as "posh" as exists in Rhode Island. Except, for also perhaps areas of EG & the East Side.

Why not have your cousin buy a mansion in Newport? Newport is the much more posh than Barrington.

By CA standards, this is cheap.

Perhaps, but posh comes with a much higher price tag in Newport than Barrington. Even by California standards.
