The mayor of Providence looks to shift money away from police and into other programs, but he won’t call it defunding.
“I have never used the term defund,” Mayor Jorge Elorza said Thursday, after he announced a review of public safety spending, with the potential of shifting money to what he calls prevention-first investments like housing, education, health care, mental health, social services, and job training.
....
Elorza would not say how much funding could be moved, but he says the plan is part of a commitment to social justice.
Interesting. You'd think with all the recent violence in his neighborhood, the last thing he would want is to divert money away from policing.
I would think the first thing he would want is to divert money toward "what he calls prevention-first investments like housing, education, health care, mental health, social services, and job training."
He is a HORRIBLE mayor. Providence is going down the tubes.
And the "diverted" money will be going down the same tube. Isn't this the clown promising "reparations" from a source of money to be "discussed another day"? You people in Providence are getting exactly the government you deserve.

Indeed, the city's prospects seem challenging. I don't understand his motivations, given the city's finances. He seems to find the $1b+ and increasing pension/health care liability unsolvable. Never mentioned above a whisper. Which is another way of saying Bankruptcy. I guess he sees himself gone when it happens, so his focus is on the here & now.
Wonder if all the upper middle class and wealthy on the east side are ok with it. They may say they are to be liberal/pc but when push comes to shove and it really hits them what will they say then
The most important part of all this is that Black Lives Matter Providence came straight out and said Elorza is not going far enough, that we need to completely abolish the Police.
Fortunately, I truly believe that neither prospect will see the light of day. Elorza seems to be moving at a politically safe snail's pace. Right now it is still in the "Review" stage, and he is refusing to make a solid promise about anything in terms of numbers or outcomes.
It could all be a show.
Sad, though, that that would be the best case scenario with this Mayor.

Haven't we been down this road before? They certainly need to rethink some of these things, but any crime reduction benefits of those are a good generation away. The need for police is not going to be any lower the day after you divert the funding from.
