I bike this trail every week. The state added a wider sidewalk deck last year on the two road bridges which now allows for two way bike traffic. The detours are fine for now with the only issue being the very narrow sidewalk on the very short stretch (two house lots) of New Meadow Road. The sidewalk cannot accommodate two way traffic here and it has utility poles in the middle with them lined with padding to lessen impact.
That is a bike "lane" (in a street), which as we know are seldom used by actual "bikes" the way they were intended. I avoid Somerville like the plague.

It's actually not bad. It took them 15 years to build a 436 foot long automobile bridge over the same river. The GW was built in 4.
And as a pro-union guy, you can appreciate the George Washington Bridgebwas not a union project.
