Hello,

I am a frequent visitor and I just love the area. But I know that visiting and living in a place are very different.

I am a NJ girl at heart (NO I don't have big hair... ) but when we've toyed with maybe moving someplace else in the future, this is one of the places on me and hubby's short list.

Can you tell me what it is like to live there?

Thanks!

Well, there's a lot of stores and cars and people. There's a beautiful bay with boats and seagulls. Hard to see much today, it's cloudy and rainy. I see green grass, thickets, and veterans' tombstones all in a row. Gulls squawk. Later I hear cars rattle on the cobblestones. It's late, bars are loud and people are pissin' in the street. Kids are smokin' up in a car. Oops, now they are going to jail for the night. It's tomorrow. The sun is shining, here I am at Easton's Beach. I think I can see Camelot in the distance. Hey, I want some pipin' hot clam cakes.

Well, that sounds more like my vacation than LIVING there! LOL

I don't think I'd live in Newport itself, I think I'd like to have it nearby though.

Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth make up whats known as Aquidneck Island. The area has route 24 running through the middle of it and the traffic can be quite congested at times; rush hours is awful. If you look at a map of Rhode Island you'll notice that most of Rhode Island's towns and cities actually do touch the ocean; it is everywhere...hence, the name "The Ocean State"....beautiful views are all over. However, the ocean definetly has it's draw backs. The biggest problem is the geography of Rhode Island; it is a state of bridges. Because Narraganset Bay nearly cuts Rhode Island in half, in order to get from east bay, to west bay many commuters have to go to Providence since that is the midpoint. Providence in its own right has bad traffic anyway because its a congested city surrounded by cities.

If you were to live on Aquidneck Island (in either, Newport, Middletown, or Portsmouth) and wanted to get anywhere west, let's say to Warwick, you'd have to go over the Newport bridge (now called the Pell bridge) which is then connected to Jamestown Island, then to the Jamestown/Verrazano bridge. The Newport bridge is a smaller scale Golden Gate bridge similar to San Francisco. The toll used to be $2.00 each way, but...they are about to start E-Z pass which would make it a bit cheaper if you purchase in bulk. This bridge is treacherous in the winter. There is a lot of Navy personel too in Newport.

Yep, stay out of living in Newport. It's not the greatest area. Check out parts of the West Bay like East and West Greenwich or North Kingstown.
