Thanks AlfieBoy. It was sad that classical education was changing, at least at Providence Classical, more than 50 years ago. Believe it or not many were upset that Greek was no longer mandatory for graduation and felt the value of the diploma was lessened.

It's often been said that a 4 year college diploma today is often barely equal to the high school diploma of 50 years ago.

You know how much I enjoy your posts.

I have to find a quote from Churchill on this subject that is most apropos -- it comes from his six volume "History of the Second World War," which I feel I started reading during the Crimean...

Don't doubt it. Anyone who has read the NY Times for more that a couple of decades can pour additional salt onto that wound. I wonder why? Tee-vee, that destroyer of brain cells and extinguisher of intellectual curiosity?

I was wrong -- not from "WWII," it was from Churchill's "My Early Life: A Roving Commission."

"Naturally I am biased in favour of boys learning English. I would make them all learn English: and then I would let the clever ones learn Latin as an honour, and Greek as a treat."

The expansive full quote is of course more than worth reading.

Now, that took some time to dredge up, mr2448 -- how about favoring us with another story from your Providence Classical era?
