Hi.... I currently live in Southern Indiana, and am looking to move to the Richmond area with my boyfriend. He lived in Richmond for 15+ years, moved to Indiana with his brother 2 years ago after a nasty divorce, and is wanting to be back near his children, and the job market in this area SUCKS!!!!
My degree sucks also (Sociology/Criminal Justice); I did this as I was interested in it, and planning on Law School....But... I have worked in Social Services for 10 years, doing investigations in Child Protection for the State; and was a Case Manager working with individuals with Developmental Disabilities.
I am more than willing to try other types of jobs, but most employers with this economy only want people with experience.

Boyfriend is back in Richmond now looking for employment and housing. I am still in Indiana as this is where my family is, and looking for employment from afar.

*I have no children at this time.
*Will be looking to rent a house as we have 2 dogs (very well behaved); looking for a place under $900 a mo
*Is the job market as bad as some of the posts state?
*Have read posts about how rude people are; this is concerning as I am not going to know anyone but BF and his friends, and don't want it to be that I become smothering because he is ALL I have out there...
*I have never lived anywhere but Indiana so this is a BIG move for me, but this is the man that I want to spend the rest of my life with...so
*I guess I am just looking for reassurance, moving from a town that it takes 25 minutes to cross the entire city. Have visited Richmond, and it will be a big change for me, and will be 12 hours away from everything I know.

Thanks for any help/suggestions/knowledge.

I can't help too much with the specifics, but no the people aren't rude. I've lived in the Northeast, Midwest, Mid Atlantic and FL (whatever that's considered) and I find the people here to be friendly. Get involved in things you enjoy and you shouldn't have a problem meeting like minded people.

How strong or weak the job market is here obviously is specific to your field and I don't know anything about the job market for social workers. In general, the unemployment rate here is almost is around 8% (v. 9.5% nationally) so we're doing better than a lot of places, but not as well as other (e.g., DC and its suburbs).

Good luck!
