We just moved to Short Pump from cross country in early '10. We also have young children.

Given that you want to be by a great school and in an apartment and in a safe area, I vote for:

Twin Hickory Elementary School.

There are beautiful apartments literally across the street (but down just a bit) called the Gardens at Twin Hickory.

The Gardens at Twin Hickory Richmond VA Apartments | Apartments in Richmond VA | Apartments in Glen Allen VA.

Twin Hickory is pricey but you'll get a phenomenal school and a super safe area. Really cool: you'll be walking distance from an absolutely gorgeous library that is wonderful for families.

So, if the Twin Hickory prices are more than you want to pay then I recommend Reflections of West Creek (the apts. we were put in by my husband's company when we relocated). The Reflections Of West Creek - Owned and Operated By: The Breeden Company - Home

These apts. also feed into an outstanding school called Shady Grove. And from these apts. you can easily get to the great library I mentioned.

If you live in Short Pump you'll be very close to: Walmart, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, a beautiful mall w/ Nordstroms etc.

Short Pump is very nice -- and I also came from an upscale community. It can be on the snooty side with plenty of luxury cars, but overall, I find the people here really open and nice.

We had lived on the west coast our entire lives and were leery about moving and we're very, very happy with Glen Allen, VA.

Good luck!

Reflections of West Creek does not feed into Shady Grove. The only apartments that feed into Shady Grove are the Carriage Homes at Wyndham which are well over $1200 for a 2 bedroom. The location of the Gardens at Twin Hickory is excellent but it would exceed the OP's budget.

I hope it will come as little surprise that Richmond is an area still healing from racial wounds but one that has made it past its history and is,for the most part, past the past. I looked at one post that states that the Public School system is full of thugs and Short Pump has more caucasians. That same Richmond school system that has "thugs" contains Open High and Franklin Military schools which has one of the highest rankings for school not only in Richmond but in the United states. I'm a parent and those are the kind of "thugs" with high achievement and test scores I'd like to have. In summary, Short Pump is very, very over priced and traffic is not great in that area. To some it is prestigious but not much more the Fan. The Fan is an awesome place and is central to most everything with culture gallore. For your 4 year old, John B. Cary, Mary Munford or Holton public schools have very high testing scores. The principal at Cary was principal of the year for Virginia. I suggest you make an appointment to tour the schools. You will not be disappointed. In terms of private schools, Victory Christian Academy is diverse, progressive, and christian. It goes up to 12th grade so your child could be there for some time. They are also the school of Faith Landmark church in case you are looking for a church family. Annointed pastors! Class ratios at their school are fairly low, children love the school and their test scoring is exceptional. Luther Memorial is private and one of the best in the area as well. It will be an investment to go there so consult your budget. Hope this helps. God bless you and your family in your transition.
