If you realize that Richmond isn't NYC, for both good and bad, I think you'll be happy here (don't know SI, only lived in Manhattan). Think you'd be happy in Raleigh as well from all I've heard.

Florida... I lived there on and off for far too many years. Can't stand it. But lots of people can... especially New Yorkers from the evidence

Update: I have been offered a position in the Ashland area. I will be coming down this weekend to look for some rental houses. We are looking to spend between $1000-$1200 for a 3/2 preferably. Can anyone recommend any good areas that are family oriented and have good schools. Thanks in advance.

Try Carriage Homes at Wyndham in Glen Allen. About 20 minute commute to Ashland I believe.

Henrico County - Glen Allen, VA Apartments and Rentals - The Carriage Homes at Wyndham

Dog friendly, lots of kids, nice attentive staff. One word of advice......do not rent an apt on bottom floor if there is a unit above you. Otherwise a nice complex. Close to shopping schools, medical offices, etc.

Congratulations! I have friends who having been living in Mechanicsville for several years and are very happy there. They have two kids in the school system and speak well of it. Good luck with your move.

Thank you all very much for the kind words! It is very refreshing to hear so much positive responses from the local community! A big change from what we are used to living in NYC! Thanks again!

No idea about Ashland, but I think you'll find the closer you live to Ashland the happier you'll be - short commutes lead to happiness.
