Hi me and my husband are currently living in green bay wisconsin..we are desperately trying to find a city that we can move to, that has, a warm and nicer weather, a good university with graduate programs and community colleges and ofcourse JOBS! We have been considering Richmond, VA because of its proximity to DC (we cant afford to live in northern VA cuz of the high cost of living) VCU. I have a bachelors degree in psychology and my husband is currently going to community college for a Computer network specialist degree.... I would be looking at doing my Masters in Occupational therapy or social work and he wants to finish his degree. Can anybody guide us if Richmond , VA would be a good place for us to live? and if not please suggest some other cities that have good potential and opportunities for someone like us... just some place thats got something to do and is not boring but is also safe and calm ....we dont want to move wayyy down south where it can get racist and whatnot... please help us! thank you

are you looking to live in the city or the surrounding suburbs? there is a world of difference between the two, esp regarding racism and safety. the economy in richmond is relatively healthy IMO. many people work/go to school downtown and live in the suburbs if thats what you're into.

The suburbs are cheaper and the commute is no more than 20 minutes pretty much from any surrounding county (most popular is West End Henrico and Chesterfield). For rent, you may get more "bang for your buck" in Chesterfield as oppose to West End/Short Pump but they're both not too far from each other price-wise.

I'm not sure the suburbs are that much cheaper. You pay a premium to live in Midlothian or Short Pump, for example, because they are safe, convenient, and have good schools.

is there a bus that runs all over the city and to the places you've mentioned such as Chesterfield? How late do the buses keep running?

You do not want to rely on public transportation to get you around Richmond.

Have you considered Raleigh?

Okay let's back up... what do you consider affordable and what do you consider to be a short commute? You say you prefer city living... what do you prefer about city living? Do you want to rent an apartment or a house? Richmond can offer lots of different things depending on your preferences.

You could consider the Lakeside area of Henrico which would put you @15minutes to VCU and your spouse @15 minutes to J Sargeant Reynolds Community College.
