I say yes ma'am a fair bit, but I don't say yes sir as much, don't know why. If I'm talking to an older woman or helping someone with something, or someone asks me to do something, I'm more likely to say yes ma'am. I think common courtesy is nice and respectful, but at the same time, it can come off uncomfortable as well, especially with younger men and women. It's all about the particular situation I guess.

I'm a born & raised Richmonder, but I currently live in Pennsylvania. I was raised to say "yes ma'am & yes sir" to my elders. Still do it to this day, because it's part of me and my manners. Regarding my parents' friends, I would'nt dare call them by their first name. I'd address them as Miss/Mister or Aunt/Uncle so & so. People my age or younger, I just call them by name or nickname. I have'nt had any problems with addressing Northun'as with "our" traditional greeting.
