Hi! My family is moving to Henrico in June and I'm asking for information on summer childcare. My son is seven so I would like to avoid an in-home daycare, only because of his age. I would love for him to be around kids his age without paying an arm and leg for it. Anyone know of any reputable programs in the area? I appreciate it!

Henrico is a big county. Can you narrow the area down? The YMCAs have day camps that people use for child care in the summer. A lot of the daycares have summer programs. The ones I know in the Western County are Child Development Center at Wyndham and Rainbow Station. Not sure what you are used to paying but they run about $250/week in this part of the county but it is very high quality care. The YMCA is about $150/week for members.

Also, for future reference the county has a free camp for residents held at a lot of the elementary schools called Summer Blast that runs Monday through Thursday from 8:30-2:30 for 8 weeks in the Summer. It is a great program. I think some people use that for child care and supplement it with a part-time nanny (older high school or college student).

You will have lots of good options, but child care is pretty expensive here.

Another idea--if your child will be attending public school, call the elementary where he/she will attend and ask which after school programs pick up from that school (our elementary has 3 or 4 although 2 dominate). That way your child will likely meet other kids from his or her school before September.

Check with Henrico Parks and Rec Recreation & Parks - The Official Website of Henrico County . They run many programs including some at county schools that are very resonable. My youngest did it when we moved here and had a great time.

I love it, you VA locals have NO CLUE what expensive child care is! To the OP child care is VERY affordable and good in this area.

Actually, I'm not a local and have two brothers with children in daycare in CT and NJ so I do know how expensive it can be. That said, whether good childcare in Western Henrico is very affordable is relative. After school care for two elementary school aged children is $250/week and I don't think that's very affordable personally. Summer care is around $2500-$3000/per child and that may be what the OP considers paying an arm and a leg.
