We are contemplating moving to the Richmond area within the next year. We have a 5 year old who will start kindergarten in the fall. She has some significant special needs, although does best in a typical classroom. Any suggestions as to areas and school districts that provide great services to kids with disabilities? Thanks!

There are only 4 school districts in the Metro Richmond Area. You would be better off to contact them directly with your daughters educational needs and determine which best fits your situation. The range of services that could be required is wide and you would get better responses if you asked on this board how is "whatever service" provided by Richmond or Hanover etc.

Good Luck!

hi SweetPen, i second what VAYankee said. youre best bet is to call up the county or city school and ask what they offer for your daughters special needs. there are 4 districts.. hanover county schools, richmond city schools, chesterfield county schools and henrico county schools. i personally like chesterfield county but i may be bias because i live in midlothian. call and get in touch with the special education dept and they can direct u further and they will help/

if u read the posts on here.. most people are in agreement that chesterfield and henrico county schools way surpass hanover and richmond city. not saying that the other 2 are terrible.. but im just drawing a conclusion from the posts i read. if im understanding correctly, chesterfield and henrico has both won awards in the past and present for education excellence and they are always on topp 100 lists for the country and i think chesterfield is the second largest school district in Virginia. im sure that they have an excellent special needs education dept. just call and find out!!

as far as areas go, i like Midlothian, the schools are nice and so are the people. u have pretty much every single store and amenity that u can think of within minutes. houses are a bit cheaper here than the west end and some are in more established neighborhoods/ west end has more newer developments a bit more traffic but they also have lots of amenities as well/ u cant go wrong in those areas/ as far as henrico goes, the west part is better and with chesterfield the northern and western part is better for more family oriented neighborhoods/

hanover is more rural and richmond is obviously more urban and has some nice parts as well..the people here on this forum know the area very well, if u explain what u want from Richmond and what your must haves would be for moving, im so sure they can help u find what u are looking for.

good luck!!
