There are a lot of older houses in Richmond Virginia. These Southern homes are usually massive inside. They've got much higher ceilings, old, wooden floor boards that creek and doors that don't close all the way. They are dark and shadows are cast in the evenings, and many are said to be haunted. These houses have got to be from the 1800s. They're not prestine palaces but I like them.

I'm attending college in Richmond next year and want to live in one of these. I am pretty much talking about the houses that are located in the Fan.

I want to know background info on these. What are these styles of houses actually called? Victorian? Exactly how old are these homes? What is the history? What streets do you recommend?

I have been in several of these homes. Some were much newer than others. Some vary in size. Only two or three have met the description above that I would like to find.

Most houses in the fan are from around the 1900 - 1925 timeframe. A few are from the 1890s, but not a lot of them (to my knowledge). I would think that the older ones are typically closer to downtown (east side of the fan). Also, many are victorian, but there are various architectural types. Check out the Church Hill area too (and the Jackson Ward).

Most streets in the Fan are fine; there aren't any that are dangerous that I've experienced. In terms of the haunted thing, lay off the bong hits; just joking (but not really).

The Fan is very safe. As for the other two neighborhoods you listed? ................

Actually the other two neighborhoods have safe ans seedy parts. The area of church hill around the church is perfectly fine. The neighborhoods about a mile away are where the crime is. Jackson ward on the other hand used to be a bad neighborhood, but is midway through the process of gentrifying.
