I've lived here for 7 years now. I'm 30 years old. I went to college with a lot of kids from Richmond and came here for a job. Is it just me, or is it something in the water here? If you aren't from Richmond, people are less accepting. I've never met folks that are so wishy-washy when it comes to plans. I actually know a couple that will never commit to something in case something better comes along. I've also never seen a culture of people so gung-ho to settle down, and stop having fun. I'm the odd man out being 30 years old and still single. I guess I've just never seen such a stuffy group of people. I'm over it. I have job opportunities in Charlottesville and Raleigh on the horizon. I hope they pan out because I'm over it. Anyone else run into this in good ol' RVA?

I'm not from Richmond, moved here from Boston, and I haven't run into any of this. Might be because I live in the city.

We get posts like this one every few months--and so does every city forum on CD. It's absurd to extrapolate from a few personal experiences to defining the character of a metropolitan area of 1.25 million people. Have fun where you go though. I haven't met any stuffy people in Richmond at all.

Moved to Richmond over 18 years ago and really have enjoyed living here. I'm not going to say that I haven't met individuals that you're describing, but I think those people are everywhere. Not sure where you moved here from, but moving to Charlottesville or Raleigh will not be much of a difference. Actually, I have met more of the people you describe in the Charlottesville area than Richmond, but like you, that is my personal opinion.

Wish you the best on whatever decision/move you make.

Sorry you were treated or felt that you were treated like a yankee, but as a DAMN YANKEE, I have not been treated any different than how my fellow yankees treat me, or how Pennsylvanians treat New Yorker, or New York City peoplet treat Long Islanders, or how New Yorkers treat M*******s (I mean Massachusetts, especially Bostonians) (sorry Charlesaf3), and on and on.

Also, there is no way you can compare being referred to as a yankee than the other word black people were referred to and use on a daily bases within themslelves. One identifies you by region, while the other is by race, but in a racial manner.

I fail to see how yankee is an offensive term. Are northerners really that offended by it?

I do want to apologize for my thread, but my ignorance never thought about you feeling offended due to ancestry. I was referring more as territorial. This was due to not thinking of the civil war, and not having ancestors from either side.
