Hi everyone

I am soon moving to Richmond (hopefully sometime this week Wednesday) all they way from England to work for an engineering company located in Ashland for about a year (I am 26 and male). I am really excited about living in Richmond as it seems that there is lots going on with loads of stuff to do in the area, in particular the snowboarding and walking in the mountains, basically I am into any outdoors stuff.

I have done a bit of research about areas to live and have probably decided on the Fan, is this a good choice – I like to be able to walk to places with lots going on, but also somewhere which is safe and quiet.

Also as I am moving on my own and going to know no one (except for work colleagues) is there lots of clubs in the area (snowboarding / rock climbing / walking) or what do people recommend as the best way to get to know a load of people?

I am probably going to stay in a hotel for a few days then find temporary accommodation (maybe someone’s spare room) while I look for my own place any advice for finding accommodation, best places to look, is there lots of it around the fan?

Any other general advice about moving / living in Richmond would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help

Chris

For Richmond's size, I'd say we have quite a few options for outdoor activities - both on an individual basis and with a club. VCU has an Outdoor Club that (I think) is open to non-students. They plan all sorts of trips throughout the year: camping, hiking, rafting, etc.

Of course, with the James River Park system running right through the city, you will have many options for rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, hiking, tubing, etc. I also believe there is a crew club that meets near Rocketts Landing.

You should have no problem meeting people here - get involved with the many social opportunities here: First Fridays Art Walk, Quoit Club, Richmond Hash House Harriers (a drinking group with a running problem), etc. Just google these things and should become more informed.

Anyway, welcome to Richmond! I hope your move goes smoothly!

We moved here from England 4 years ago and never looked back - my husband is an architect! Send me a message and I will tell you whatever you need to know. What part of England are you from? We live on the other side of Richmond - midlothian, but can put you in touch with a realtor friend who is based in Ashland. Good luck and welcome.

I live only 25 miles from Ashland, I have lived in Virginia since 1970. The only thing happening near Richmond, is in downtown, Shockoe Bottom area on Cary Street.

Default moving to Richmond

Hi there. Do you know the Crones in Ashland?

We're moving to Richmond sometime this year...fingers crossed. Glenn Crone has offered to help us find a temp rental until we get to know the place ourselves.

Glad to hear you're happy in RVA.
