I'm interested in learning what clothing styles people in RVA wear... all age groups. Trendy, casual, preppy, conservative, lots of skin or no skin, neat, sloppy, anything goes, color or neutrals/black. Thx

When I lived there in the the 70's it was very preppy. Khakis and buttondowns for the guys, and seersucker blazers in the summer. Skirts and matching sweater sets for the ladies. Lots of Madras also.

One weird thing about Richmond, frequently people would ask: "What school did you go to?" I think they hoped to hear "UVA" of "U of Richmond".

I hope that people have diversified a bit now.

I think it really depends on the neighborhood. In the more urban areas there's a mix of punk/tattoo, generic t-shirt/rather informal, and preppy college-style clothing. I'd say the West End is a little more old Southern/traditional. Don't know that the other areas have a particular style other than the generic golf shirt/khaki / dresses for women style similar to other upscale suburban areas in the country.

I'd say in general, though, this question is really a little too broad to answer. It's a little like asking about the style in NYC without specifying a neighborhood, and there's no good way to answer that because Williamsburg style, for example, couldn't be more different than the Upper East Side.

Please explain to me what in the world Southern/traditional means. Is everyone in the West End wearing coveralls and straw hats? Who cleans all of the mule poo along Broad Street?

Thanks for the sarcasm. I guess thats what I get for being the only person trying to be helpful in the thread. Feel free to weigh in with something helpful next time.

The style I had in mind was something like Designing Women.

Hey you're from New York, you're supposed to have thicker skin than that!

And being from NY I guess I can understand your perception of anything that is not NY. But Designing Women? Jeeze come on man ... in 2015???

I once had a friend from Philly that complained about a cheesesteak she bought while vacationing in Florida. Really? You're from Philadelphia. Why are you buying a cheese steak in freak in Florida and why would you even expect it to be comparable to back home?

Where you come from and what youre accustomed to obviously tremendously influences how one perceives the world around them.
