I just moved up to Richmond from the Jacksonville FL area, and I am excited that Publix will be coming to Richmond.
In the 6 weeks that I have been here, I would say that they are most like Kroger, but they don’t offer loyalty cards for discounted prices. They do however have great BOGO free sales all the time.

In Florida, the prices at Publix tend to be a little higher than most grocery stores, but the service is absolutely out of this world (think Chick-fil-a level of service). Before I moved, I actually made it a point to seek out the manager of my local publix and tell him how much I enjoyed shopping there (the slogan at Pulix is "Where shopping is a pleasure"

Publix will routinely break packages if, for example, you only want two steaks out of the packaged three. Also, the Publix deli is top notch. There is even talk of them opening stand alone delis, because of their excellent subs. Also, their fried chicken and rotisserie chicken are also great.

Here’s a link from Clark Howard about 10 things you didn’t know about Publix.

Publix has created competition for Kroger in its Harris Teeter, Kroger Atlanta, and Kroger Nashville divisions. Kroger should improve its Kroger Mid-Atlantic Division to compete with one of its major competitors in the southeastern United States.

Despite Florida having a higher cost of living, Publix's prices have been lower and better than Winn-Dixie's prices for several years. Winn-Dixie and other Southeastern Grocers banners BI-LO and Harvey's Supermarkets have been obliterated by Publix.

Publix is definitely better than Winn-Dixie. I lived in Northern St. Johns County, just a mile from the Duval/Jax line and we had a Walmart neighboorhood market and Publix right across the street from each other. I will say that the Walmart was cheaper than Publix, but a lot of times, they didn't have their shelves stocked, so we would just go across the street to Publix for the rest of the items.

I have found that Kroger prices are very comparable to Walmart, if not better on most items.
I will be going to Publix though for their BOGOs and chicken dinners

This is an update for Publix stores opening in Chesterfield County, Colonial Heights, Henrico County, and Richmond.

These are stores the stores either under construction or have closed for conversion from Martin's to Publix:
  • Publix #1566, Nuckols Place, 5400 Wyndham Forest Drive, Glen Allen, Virgina 23059-5942 (Henrico County)
  • Publix #1587, John Rolfe Commons, 2250 John Rolfe Parkway, Henrico, Virginia 23233-6913 (Henrico County); formerly Martin's #6434 (Pharmacy, Fuel, Union Bank & Trust)
  • Publix #1589, Cross Ridge, 10250 Staples Mill Road, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060-3251 (Henrico County); formerly Martin's #6433 (Pharmacy, Union Bank & Trust)
  • Publix #1591, Virginia Center Marketplace, 10150 Brook Road, Glen Allen, Virginia 23059-6514 (Henrico County); formerly Martin's #6435 (Pharmacy, Union Bank & Trust)
  • Colonial Square, 3107-15 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 (Colonial Heights); formerly Martin's #6494 (Pharmacy, Fuel (offsite), Bank)
  • Short Pump Crossing, 3460 Pump Road, Henrico, Virginia 23233-1111 (Henrico County); formerly Martin's #6421 (Pharmacy)
  • White Oak Village, 4591 South Laburnum Avenue, Henrico, Virginia 23231-2421 (Henrico County); formerly Martin's #6499 (Pharmacy, Union Bank & Trust)
  • Harbor Point Village, 13700 Hull Street Road, Midlothian, Virginia 23112-2000 (Chesterfield County); formerly Martin's #6438 (Pharmacy, Fuel, Union Bank & Trust)
I cannot confirm yet if Publix #1588 is formerly Martin's #6499, White Oak Village, 4591 South Laburnum Avenue, Henrico, Virginia 23231-2421 (Henrico County). When Publix acquires a quantity of stores, they are given a range of numbers. Seeing how Publix stores 1587 and 1589 are announced, I think Martin's #6499 is Publix #1588.

Publix stores 1566, 1587, 1589, and White Oak Village, Henrico, if Publix #1588, are projected to open in the summer of 2017.

These are the three remaining Martin's stores to convert to Publix and remain open at the present:
  • Martin's #6429, Richmond Shopping Center, 3522 West Cary Street, Richmond, Virginia 23221-2729 (Richmond)
  • Martin's #6439, The Village, 7035 Three Chopt Road, Richmond, Virginia 23226-3606 (Richmond) (Union Bank & Trust)
  • Martin's #6498, Westpark, 9645 West Broad Street, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060-4116 (Henrico County) (Pharmacy, Fuel, Union Bank & Trust)
