Hi,
Weve been looking at real estate via the internet and found lots of homes south west of richmond but none north west. What gives?
Is there a difference in the areas surrounding Richmond 15-40 miles out?

It's probably your price range.

If you're searching in the south west, you'll find a lot of nice homes in the upper 200's and 300's. But if you're looking in the north west, you'd need to bump the range up to the upper 400's and higher.

This is just based on my experience looking at homes around there.

You also need to watch the "city" you are searching for. For some reason Richmond has the surrounding localities divided into numbered areas (does anyone out there know the history on how this came about?), and the same county can have many different areas. This link (inRich.com: Home Sales, Rentals, Open House Classifieds and More for the Richmond Region) will show you an area (number) map in case you have not seen it before. And I agree with Eric, price may also be a factor limiting your search.

Good luck with your move - I was in your shoes a few months ago!

Dress for the weather... it's abnormally HOT this weekend. Heat index over 100.

yeah, summer heat/humidity tends to be brutal. Whatever else can be said about Virginia, the climate is decidedly southern.

We just got back, although we didnt go north of Richmond due to time constraints, we did go south, as in Hopewell and Petersburg. We drove through at 8pm Sunday and everything was closed. All we saw were ghetto youths behaving like ghetto youths. Having grown up near NYC and having spent 10years in Oakland, CA ghettos I thought I had seen it all. Wow.
Nice architecture though, and less garbage on the ground.

Wow you definitely wasted the trip by only venturing to Hopewell and Petersburg.

I agree... sounds like you picked the worst part of the Richmond area to visit.

Also, when people talk about the 'south side', it's really more to the south-west, and south of the river. The 'west end' is actually to the north-west of Richmond...

You sometimes can't take the names litterally.

Anyways, I hope you visit again and next time venture to the other side of the 'tracks' so to speak.
