My family and I are moving to the Richmond VA area. I have a child with PDD-NOS which is a mild form of autism. He needs speech therapy and Occupational Therapy and Behavioral Therapy. Can anyone recommend a public school in the Richmond Suburbs that supplies these needs? He is really doing great and recovering so well.

Is there also any special needs insurance companies out there that I can look into for him?

Thanks so much.

I don't speak from much experience (my 4 year old does have an IEP and receives speech therapy at my daughter's elementary school in Henrico County and so far I've been very pleased), but I would look at schools in Western Henrico, Chesterfield or Hanover Counties because those are the best schools in the area. The Three Chopt school district in Henrico County has excellent schools.

If I am not mistaken, Robious Elementary has a good program for autism...this is in Chesterfield County. A friend sent her child there.

I would avoid Richmond City as much as possible if you need public school. There was actually a law suit against Richmond City Schools because they failed to accommodate a handicapped child on the playground.
