Hey guys...just moved to richmond back in october...its not too bad...I'm from Stafford, va (4th grade to 12th and parents just relo'd to richmond in august)...I graduated from West Virginia University in 07 with a bachelors in multidiscplinary studies with minors in business administration, economics, and entrepreneurship...what's up with the job market here? Do they cater to the young folk? I got a cs gig at suntrust mortgage but that's through a temp agency...I was at BofA for 1 month as a temp for the infamous loan processing scam but they cut my temp assignment for no reason...what's up with this place?...this place is supposed to have 7 of the fortune 500 but noone is hiring...it also seems like the only jobs are in mortgage...I got in a postbaccalaureate program at vcu for accounting so I think I might call it quits on this town when I'm done with my certificate...perhaps relo to dc and get a gravy gov gig...well that's my blog...feel free to respond

A combination of 3 concentrations, hence the minors in economics, entrepreneurship, and business administration.

I'm guessing you aren't focusing only on the big Fortune ranked companies in town, but... There's a ton of start-ups and small firms popping up in finance, insurance, banking around town as the big firms have stalled in the current environment. Dig a little deeper and I'm sure there's something for you.

Lol I guess you can tell that I only took two English classes in college, so excuse my grammar. I was just trying to get the scoop on what is going on in Richmond, and also where do the majority of people work. How did you get your foot in the door?

thanks,

I don't think you really need to apologize - we all the quick blog grammar errors no matter how many English classes we have taking we are just getting out our questions and answers. Good luck and your degree sounds very interesting.

Lots of people are unemployed in Richmond. Qimonda went bankrupt and laid off a lot of people, Genworth had layoffs, LandAmericaFinancial went bankrupt and laid a bunch of people off. Altria/Philip Morris is a big employer in this area. Capital One also has a huge office on Broad St. Circuit City is gone now, they laid a bunch of people off. You got Carmax, Meadwestvaco, Brink's, Markel Insurance Corp, Nationwide has a claims office, and there are thousands of other small businesses.

I thought Business Administration was a general degree to get, but a multidiverse degree just sounds even more general. Why did you chose that degree? I've never even heard of it. Most business jobs are going to want Accounting or Finance majors.

There isn't one big place that everyone works.

My advice is to check out the state and government jobs.

Also, you better have an amazing resume, or a good GPA, or something that wows people. There are people with excellent grades, many years of work experience and advanced degrees fighting for the same positions.

How many jobs do you apply to per day? I would suggest at least 10 a day, if you are serious about finding a job.
