Hello,

My family is planning to move to the Roanoke/Salem area and have two children. Our four year old is autistic, yet high functioning, and we were hoping for any information regarding the special education services in the school system provided in the area. Also, any information on outside services for OT/PT would be a great help.

Are there any area(s) that are better/worse for him? Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thank you so much,

Caryn

The Achievement Center might be able to give you some info. There's also at least one thread in the archives of this forum asking the same question. A search may reveal others. Good luck.

We have a 4 year old high functioning autistic child, and spoke with the Roanoke city, county, Franklin county, Bedford county, and Salem special ed personnel before moving.

We chose Roanoke county(Cave Spring specifically), and have been very happy with our decision. Make sure you have an IEP before you move-its your greatest weapon.

Remember you also have to consider your neurotypical childs educational needs too!

Salem told us point blank they were just now getting equipped to work with autistic kids and look at Roanoke county, and Roanoke city schools are a disaster all around.

The Blue Ridge Autism center (what the aforementioned Achievement Center is now called) costs as much as college (seriously), so be aware of that.

Default Thank you for the assistance.

Thank you so much for your help and advice. We have the IEP plans together, so that will be in our corner.
