My wife and I spent some time in Roanoke from Sept 22 to Sept 26. The weather during our stay was mostly cloudy and overcast with some rain. On Sunday we were at the wine festival near Smith Mountain lake. While we were at the festival, it was sunny with some clouds. In town, it was still overcast when we got back. Monday morning was cloudy and foggy til we drove out of it on I81 on our way home. My question is how common is this - overcast in the valley, but sunny as you leave the valley?

It's pretty uncommon ... the sustained cloudy/rainy weather, that is. We get enough rain throughout the year but spread out, not days and days at a time. Cloud cover/precipitation can definitely be different from the Roanoke Valley to the Shenandoah Valley though.

i've been here 7 months & it's not common. that was one of the only times i saw the rainy weather draw out like that. we get plenty of rain, overall, though. just spread out, like headnsouth said, 9 times out of 10.
