Does anyone here live in Vinton? If so, what do you like about it? What don't you like about it? What are the people like who live there?

I don't live in Vinton, but have some friends who do. Seems pretty normal, if a bit depressing. Doesn't seem to have a lot of character to it.

It's small town America - in the good sense. Good selection of restaurants (thai, mexican, italian, american), small shops (not abandoned like in too many downtowns these days), ocassional festivals (dogwood coming up), good selection of grocery stores, convenient to Roanoke, pretty low costs of living.

I second the Thai food mention! Also love the barbecue place in downtown. And Angelo's Mexican place is by far the best of that type of food in the region -- the atmosphere, too, is something totally unique.

I live a little bit outside of Vinton (have a Vinton mailing address). I like the town a lot. The selection and appearance of the recenly refurbished Kroger is better than any other in the Roanoke Valley. The town slants more blue-collar than other urban localities, but there's a lot to love about little Vinton. There are still couple of empty storefronts, but a new restaurant just opened up in one of those spaces -- a sign of definite growth!

Depending on the neighborhood in Vinton, you might get a lot of similar-looking brick family homes, which are on the small side. Other neighborhoods certainly have a more diverse look to them; but don't go in expecting any McMansions. The best part -- and this is the absolute truth -- in even the smaller homes and more blue-collar neighborhoods, the yards and houses are kept up very nicely. I really hate to say this, but when you drive from Vinton into Roanoke, you'll notice when you're no longer in Vinton by the upkeep of the homes you pass.

Generally people take good care of their homes in Vinton, there are some nice
established neighborhoods but it also has many rental homes. The downtown
has been improving some but by Roanoke standards it is not even noticable to
those outside Vinton. I think most Vintonites prefer to keep Vinton small and quiet with few urban amenities.
