I have always heard it's tough to get a job as an Elementary School teacher in the county schools. However, I've also heard that lately they are growing and a lot of the baby boomer teachers are retiring. Is this still the case? Thanks.

It's tough.

They are filling some of the positions internally within the district to avoid layoffs. Dear spouse subbed city and county last year, and got a teaching assistant job with the county for 2014-2015 - hopefully this will be a "foot in the door."

There tend to be a few more openings in the city schools and she landed some interviews there last year, but nothing came to fruit.

Probably depends on WHO you know.

Thanks for your help. I will be student teaching in about a year and a half and intend to do it in the county. Hopefully that will open some doors. My children will be attending the county schools so I'd much rather work there.

WELCOME!! We live in the Mount Pleasant zone but it is a stone's throw from the city line (Garden City School).

Keep all your options open! Since the county is shaped something like a doughnut (a "ring" around city and Salem) - many of the city schools are much closer to us than the other county schools. Our kids drive past a city middle school to get to their zoned middle school in the county.
