Hi there, I recently moved to Roanoke from So California so I know how stressful it can be! I will offer any help that I can and tell you what I have observed so far. (I just got here in January)

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am still in California until the end of next month/early September. I have been spending a lot of time looking at listing on the usual Zillow/Trulia and other sites along with Craigslist. I still am having a very hard time finding a house for rent. Seems there are lots of houses for sale but most are very outdated. Looks like I'm not gonna be able to come out before I move so, I will probably check out some apartments that don't require a lease just for a short term stay. Very different market in Roanoke then places I've lived before. Thanks for all the help though!
