Default The Taubman is Here to Stay!

Roanoke never ceases to amaze me when I first read of the plans to build such
a unique structure downtown. Even Wayne Newton said it was the "wreck of the flying nun". Coming from Las Vegas with an Egyptian pyramid hotel that lights up at night, shooting fountains with music, and a hotel called "New York, New York" that was an odd statement. I think the problem with folks outside of here is that they all think we are backwoods hillbillies from the South, especially the mountains of Virginia. I like Art of all kinds. It should not be just for people who travel to Paris who appreciate the great masters of French impressionist works. Americans have never been art lovers, most of us prefer NFL games and Nascar. The low attendance the first year was attributed to the high ticket prices and the recession I feel. Most of the revenue of the operation of the Taubman is NOT from attendance anyway, it is from endowments. So sadly to say to Mudcat and the rest of the Taubman haters the museum is not going away! There is a lot of "old money" in these parts who support these projects.
How this museum could be built in Roanoke and NOT New York City or even
Washington DC tells the real story!

Perhaps the Wall Street Journal and the nation would be better off if they stuck to investigating and reporting on the gross malfeasance of corporate America and not trying to be art or architecture critics.

Oh wait, they failed miserably at that so I guess they have to try something else.

Actually what I don't understand about having the foamhenge guy's installation is that it's located right up the road. The point of having temporary, traveling exhibits is to give the locals access to something that isn't normally accessible. When I have company, I sometimes take them to Natural Bridge & all the quirky stuff that's there (and Devil's Marbleyard, that's a great hike). Natural Bridge is local. I'd go to the Taubman if there was an exhibit there from Cleveland or NY or Muskogee, but I'm not going to go to the Taubman because the foamhenge stuff is visiting from Natural Bridge.

At least something came out of those Bush tax cuts for the very rich!! They prefer to put their money in endeavors such as the Arts. The Jefferson Center is another odd commodity here in Roanoke. Culture is King in Roanoke, not sports!!

Its one of those "hokey small town" interest stories. However, I gotta say the WSJ has a lower % of subscribers than the RT times does.

The WSJ sells 2.1 million a day in a metro area with 18 million (not including NJ and CT), the Rt sells 97k a day with what, 250k or so here?

WSJ is not seeking a larger audience--just a rich one.

For what it's worth, the guy who wrote the story for the WSJ is a former Roanoke Times reporter. So it's not like this topic was so big that it showed up on a random WSJ writer's desk.

In fact, the author probably freelanced the story, and wrote about a place he was comfortable and familiar with -- so that he could get a few bucks in his pocket.

The Taubman gets exhibitions from all over, as well as film series, lectures, performing arts, and lots of great fun art activities for kids. There is something for everyone. Check it out, admission is free every Saturday.

When we finally make it to Roanoke, I think the "110 Society" membership is a great way to help the Taubman - even for those of us who may not be wealthy benefactors.

For $110 you get "reciprocal free admission" to over 80 museums in 14 states in the SE USA.
