Hi! My wife and I are thinking of retiring to the Roanoke area from Charlotte. We would like to buy acreage (10 or more?) in a mountain community/subdivision and build. Are there such places in a commutable distance from Roanoke? Any names would be appreciated! Thanks! Jeff

If you like mountains you will love the area! It seems new building lots/subdivisions are built on the sides of mountains now. Botetourt County
is my favorite since it is an easy commute to town. Once you drive past the
McMansions(formerly apple orhards) and the new Daleville Town Center(shopping, medical, etc), new subdivisions seem to be popping up out that way. South of Roanoke another popular area is Franklin County around Smith Mountain Lake. There you have the mountains and the lake, which tends to be on the upscale side. If you like "Mayberry" type towns look at Buchanan in Botetourt County. Bedford & Montgomery Counties are also good choices.

How about Floyd County? the Copper Hill area?
Anyone know about the mountain lot subdivision community options in the area?

Floyd county has gotten so popular that land prices seem to be higher there now (was out looking with my sister recently). I think Botetourt is a good suggestion

JeffRome,

There are two places that come to mind in Floyd County -- The Overlook and The Preserve at Twin Falls. I'll send you a PM with a web link since I've been dinged before by the forum moderator for "real estate advertising" by including a link in my reply. I looked at these a couple of years ago, but the wife would not do the drive up and down Bent Mountain to get back to Roanoke via Rt 221. Also, many of these properties are "off the paved road" with access by gravel roads that tend to require upkeep. My wife's poor Prius was out of its element on these roads.

Happy hunting!

"Cahas Green" in Boones Mill, Franklin co. is a beautiful sub-division. (I am not a realtor).
Five acre lots are the largest you can buy. However, it's a beautiful area and only 20 minutes from Roanoke. It might be worth a look.
Moreover, they just had a lot auction; prices have come down because of the economy.
