Looking for anyone who is familiar with both cities and can draw a comparison. My husband and I are considering both for possible relocation. Thanks!

My friends daughter go to school there. The word is much colder and earlier winters and hotter summers. And no large lakes to cool off in.

From what I see in terms of living options, it seems like there aren't that many suburban options in the Omaha area versus the Rochester area. So, that could be something to think about.

Also, Rochester is a bigger metro in terms of population and you might have more options to visit out side of the area if you want somethng different. Meaning, you have cities like Buffalo, Toronto, Syracuse and many other major cities in the uS and canada to visit within a reasonable distance. you also have areas like the 1000 Islands, the Finger Lakes and the Adirondacks to visit as well.

I also think that it will depend on your budget, what you value and the job offer too.

The more we research, the clearer it becomes that Rochester has proximity to a lot of desirable getaways, especially compared to Omaha. One of our big concerns is that it seems that Rochester gets about 3x more precip than Omaha. Not sure how I'd do with such little sun. Also, my husband, who grew up in Pittsford, is kind of set on living in Pittsford if we move there. Can you offer any insights on suburbs that are comparable to Pittsford in terms of amenities, schools, etc? The housing in Pittsford seems kind of high, especially compared to Omaha. My husband earns a good living, but we were hoping not to have to spend a high amount on housing so that we can afford to travel, etc. We were hoping to spend less than 300K for a nice house. Thanks for your input!

While the average house price in Pittsford is somewhare around $300k, many houses sell for over $500k. That means you can find a nice house for much less than $300k.

Here's the link for local real estate.

Also, there are some suburban areas that are nice and you could spend between 150-200k for a nice home. You might like West Irondequoit, Hilton, Brighton, Webster, Fairport, Penfield and Honeoye Falls-Lima in terms of school districts. It's not that the other suburban school districts are "bad", but those tend to be the best, along with Pittsford.

If you want information on schools, google NYSED report cards or check here under NY: GreatSchools - Public and Private School Ratings, Reviews and Parent Community

Thanks! Will check it out. It seems like there is a very high concentration of great schools in the Rochester area, which is a big attraction to us with two young kids. Where we live schools are terrible, unless you pay a very high tuition! Take care
