My wife and I are moving to the Rochester area because she is attending Narareth College for grad school. We are looking for apartments or houses to rent in the suburbs of Rochester but I'm finding mixed results on Google.

A little background from where we are from is a suburb of Flint, MI (not the safest city by any means) but our suburb is Swartz Creek about 15-20 minutes out of Flint. The area is more so farmish land area so its safe and quite in most areas. We aren't necessarily looking for a farmland type area but we are still close to a mall, Best Buy, and other big stores like that which we would like to have near by.

So the question is where can we find an area about 30 minutes or closer to the city so she doesn't have to drive far for classes and still stay in a nice area where we wouldn't be worried to walk about to our car at night. We are looking to keep rent around $900 or lower and anything else that may help narrow any ideas feel free to ask. Thanks!

For shopping not too far from Nazareth, look into Henrietta and perhaps Victor. Suburbs in the area are overwhelmingly fine, with maybe the exception of a few apartment complexes. I can't think of anything similar to say Beecher/other parts of Mount Morris(which have a "rep" in the Flint area) in the Rochester area. I'd say to look in the Eastern suburbs in terms of your search.

Here are a couple of guides: Rochester, NY apartments and classified listings from the The Renters Guide Magazine.

rochester, NY apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

Thanks ckhthankgod! Yeah places like Beecher/Mount Morris is what we want to avoid. Granted they have areas that aren't terrible but still would like to avoid such places.

Definitely look into the Eastern suburbs including Brighton and Henrietta. Something similar to Swartz Creek would probably be Fairport: Village of Fairport

Macedon and Farmington might be up their alley.

Fairport. It's practically next door to Nazareth College.

Nazareth is in the wealthy suburb of Pittsford....not much in the way of apartment/rentals there but in southern areas of the nearby town of Brighton you will find more rental options. You'd be about 15 minutes from downtown Rochester. For the more bix-box suburbia that you are looking for a little further out, you could look into Victor which is just over the county line in Ontario County. About 30 minutes to downtown Rochester and is the location of Eastview mall (the largest and nicest mall in the Rochester area that has the types of stores you say you want to be in close proximity to). I'm not terribly familiar with that general area but I feel like there might be more options for apartments/rentals in Victor than in Pittsford.
