I think the folks moving here will have a good time. Just buy a proper coat and ice scraper. Check the neighborhood between Mt. Hope and South. Also check south of the U of R and Elmwood, (Mt. Hope and Lattimore area) you may be surprised what you can find. Cobbs Hill is a bit further out but beautiful.
The Distillery and Elmwood Inn are good spots close by the south wedge for a chill night of wings and sports on TV, quite a few U of R folks, but they are not 'college bars'. The South Wedge near South and Gregory are more happening. Lux is a good laid back hipster type of spot (all the PBR you can shake a can at). Of course here is Alex-East if ou want to go a bit crazy, and the St. Paul Quarter has some neat spots like Tappas and Scotland Yard. Indy Movies your speed? Go to the Little Theater.
If you like BBQ (not going to compare it to TN or KY) but Rochester is not a BBQ dead zone. Dinosaur BBQ is very good and is in the city proper. Bands play on weekends. Sticky Lips Juke Joint on Jefferson Ave in Henrietta is newer and an up an coming place with a HUGE bar, good live music and tasty food. Also check out Nashvilles on East Henreitta Rd (Mt Hope essentially becomes East Henrietta) and go get your honky tonk on.
I think you folks will feel right at home (- the weather) in no time.
In summer head up to lake Ontario (Hamlin Beach is the best) or head south to the Finger Lakes for wine tours and beautiful scenery. Lastly there is Letchworth state park, home of the largest river cut gorge east of the Mississippi for hiking and such.
Enjoy your time. Rochester is what you make of it and good luck in grad school!
